With a total footprint area of 41004 ft2, 167 feet of height, and a gross area of 2.5 million square feet, of which 1.25 million is retail space – Macy’s Herald Square is among the biggest department stores in the world, at the same time being the biggest one in the whole United States.

The 20-story steel construction building was raised in 1902. Since then it has gone through several renovations, with the most recent one, as reported by the New York Times article “For Macy’s, a Makeover on 34th Street”, has been the most costly renovation any department store in the world has gone through – over 4 years it cost $400 million.
